Sukiyaki: "Auf dem Pflug gebraten." Das japanische Nationalgericht ist ein ideales, abendfüllendes und kulinarisches Gästeessen. Es war früher das Gericht der Fischer und Bauern, die - ursprünglich kein Fleisch, sondern nur Meerestiere allenfalls Geflügel - auf einem heißen Stück Eisen zubereiteten.

Junichi Suzuki directs this low-key family drama about a Western-style restaurant called the Boston Grill in Yokohama's Isezaki-cho. The owner of the establishment is Hanako (Sachiko Hidari), who has fashioned a successful restaurant based on her sumptuous sukiyaki. Her health is spiraling southwards thanks to Alzheimer's disease. She finds herself suddenly reliving the terrors of the war and wandering off to remote corners of the neighborhood. Her harried son, Ryohei (Tamio Kawachi), is trying to run the restaurant himself with fair to middling success. His daughter, Yuka (Yuka Sekiya), wants to help her father and grandmother more, but her epilepsy makes her fearful of venturing too far from home. Ryohei's other daughter (Rika Sekiya) thus shoulders far more family responsibility than she'd like. In addition to working days at the local post office, she waits tables at night at the family's biz. Meanwhile, a straight-laced salesman (Jin Yamaguchi) is quietly pursuing Rika, though she isn't interested. Yet when she meets a crude but handsome ship's cook (Kai Shishido) who has a gift for the culinary arts, Rika's life changes for the better. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
Das japanische Lied Ue o muite arukō (Sukiyaki) von Kyu Sakamoto (etwa: „Während ich laufe, schaue ich nach oben“) wurde im Vereinigten Königreich als Instrumentalfassung unter dem Titel Sukiyaki veröffentlicht und ein großer Hit. Man benötigte wahrscheinlich einen eingängigen Namen. Allerdings steht der Inhalt des Liedtextes in keiner Weise in Verbindung mit dem Gericht Sukiyaki.
From Toba Kerson's notes: Family (father and two grown twin daughters) run a small restaurant called Boston Grill. Their grandmother, who has Alzheimers Disease, also lives with the. One sister also works in the post office and the other has epilepsy. A handsome womanizing ship’s cook comes on shore, goes to the post office, and asks Rika if there is a good restaurant nearby. She sends him around to the family restaurant. He hates the food, tells them it is terrible, the father punches him, then he offers to cook for the restaurant. He doesn’t show up after a couple of days, calls after a while and says e is sending them another cook, a younger more innocent man who falls in love with Yuki. 1st event - She has a seizure in the restaurant before the customers come in the second chapter. Goes bed. Father calls other daughter to come home and help. Says, “I’m in trouble. The cook hasn’t shown up and Yuki had a fit. In the restaurant, someone asks for Yuki and father says she is not working today. Someone says she had another epileptic fit. His female companion says “If you put a sandal on her head, it stops the fit. Man says, not a sandal, you fool, a zori. Father punches him and tells him to get out. 2nd mention – second cook and Yuki are taking a walk, she tells him she has a chronic disease, epilepsy and he says, well it’s not a problem if someone is with you all the time. She says it would be a great burden to someone. 3rd event – Rika has a boyfriend who wants her to meet his father at a dinner at Christmas time. She doesn’t know if she loves him. She tells her sister about it and Yuki decides to masquerade as her sister and go in her place to dinner in order to find out if the boyfriend really loves her. Rika is standing across the street from the restaurant and she suddenly hears “call an ambulance.” She rushes in, Yuki has had a seizure, and Rika weeps and apologizes to everyone that it was wrong to test if he loved her when she doesn’t love him, 4th event – the man who made the unkind comments about Yuki in the restaurant in the first scene runs into Yuki and her boyfriend in the street. He makes cracks at her such as damn epileptic and she goes after him for him to repeat that outloud. She and her boyfriend laughingly hold hands and say what a shame it is that he is so prejudiced.
